A family in Bakod village

Updated: Apr 26, 2020

As many of you know, I've been teaching English at Hope School in a village called Bakod, near Takeo. As well as providing education to the children of the village, Hope school helps out the people with the most needs. I've been fundraising money to help this project, and I can't thank the people who donated enough, not only does it mean a lot to the people who receive the help, but it means an awful lot to me personally. The purpose of this post is to show you exactly where the money is going, I know it's a pain sometimes when you donate money and don't know where it's going so I will try my best to give you as much information as I can.

It's going to one of the poorest families in the village. They are a family who has 8 kids, they live in a house made out of materials that they have foraged. They do not have a floor, they sleep on bricks. When it rains the house floods and is filled with snakes and other bugs. The money is going to build them a concrete floor so that they can be safe and healthy, and so that they can have an inside rather then an outside.

I went to visit them a couple of days ago. Of course what I found was a great family who welcomed me, a stranger, into their home. The kids where happy, we played 'volleyball' and flew kites made out of plastic rubbish. The mother was boiling something on the stove, and 25 ducklings where running about the place (40 ducklings had been donated to the family 2 weeks before).

With visits like this I always feel uncomfortable taking pictures, but I understand it is important to show people what it's like. I asked the mother if it was ok to take some, and she said it was no problem, so here is what the house looks like.

It will cost around £300 to build.
